Recommendations on Foundations
by: Beauty Mama
This was on CBS News with product recommendations for Calvin Klein,Neutrogena etc.
(CBS) InThe Early Show'sAgeless Beauty segment, Beauty and Wellness Contributor Dayle Haddon debunks the myths of buying and applying foundation.
Today's foundation is the bridge between skin care and cosmetics. It's about having skin that looks healthy, that radiates a glow, and it's about coverage that looks natural. If you look as if you're wearing a mask, you haven't found the right foundation.
Don't be afraid to change foundation as the season's change, or as your skin changes, (e.g., warmer weather, hormonal changes, etc.) For most of us, we never know what our skin is going to look like when we get out of the bed in the morning. On one day, it may be clear and perfect, the next day it may look as if we caught pox during our sleep.
There are three things that women should be interested in when they're choosing foundation:
COLOR
TEXTURE
BENEFITS OF THE PRODUCT
COLOR
Yellow-based foundations look more natural on all of our skin - from the fairest of complexions to the darkest colored skin. Pink is great for our cheeks & lips, but it doesn't make for the most natural-looking face. Foundation should provide a neutral canvas, not add color to the face.
Don't be shy about combining two or even three shades of foundation to get the color that you want, using the palm of your hand as a palette. (Example: If your foundation is too light, mix with a bronzer. If your foundation is too dark, mix with another foundation that's 2 shades lighter); or, look for foundations that offer more than one color in the package.
Products:Shu Uemura cream foundations — individual, pocket-sized foundation in a container that attaches to a second foundation container, creating a 'foundation kit/compact'.
At a minimum, you'll need two shades per year. (Due to changes in skin color and to the fact that once liquid foundation has been opened, it expires between three to six months; compacts last six to nine months).
Test the color of a foundation by drawing a stripe along the jaw line. Color should disappear into your skin. You can also use the back of your hand to test how much coverage a foundation will provide, by checking to see how well it covers veins and other discolorations.
TEXTURE
Texture is important to women. It affects how a foundation feels on our skin and it determines how much coverage we're going to get, from the lightest formulas, to heavier coverage. Also, remember that certain foundations are more appropriate for different times of the day. If you're going to an important event and you want to achieve a polished look, it's appropriate to wear a foundation that offers more coverage. If you're on your way to the gym and want to cover the redness around the nose, chin or mouth, it's better to choose an oil-free tinted moisturizer.
Sheer Liquids & Light Coverage
Sheer formulas are a quick fix that will smooth any differences in texture, or even color without hiding the real look of skin. The pigments are translucent, making sheers almost undetectable on the skin. It's a very forgiving foundation - almost mistake proof. These formulas are great for young women during the summertime, when you want to brighten the skin, but not feel like you're wearing a mask or, for women who have beautiful skin, and are looking for the a touch of coverage.
Products: Prescriptives Traceless Skin Response Tint — Light coverage products are great to use during the daytime, when you want to look pulled together, but not "done". You can also use these products to brighten the areas of the face that are naturally darker, such as under the eyes, or around the nose (a problem that's common for most women).
Calvin Klein Light Coverage Foundation, SPF 8; Lancome Photogenic skin-illuminating makeup
Medium - Heavier Coverage
Solids, creams & stick foundations offer more coverage. These formulas create a "polished", made-up look, which one would use if they were going out for the evening. Or, as we get older, when we want that extra coverage, especially around the eye area, where wrinkles become more visible, or around the nose and lip area, where discoloration can be a problem.
Product: Era Face Spray-On Foundation, Stile Complete Coverage, Lorac Satin Makeup
Application
You don't need to apply foundation all over the face
Many women can use their foundation in place of a concealer
Apply or dot color to the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin using your finger
Dot foundation on any blemishes, or red spots, under eyes, around nose
Blend with a synthetic sponge beginning in the middle of the face, extending outward
If you're using a foundation that sets to a matte finish, skip the powder. Otherwise, set your foundation (and, remove excess oil) with a translucent pressed powder and large puff
Start by dabbing on the palm of hand to remove excess powder and wrap the puff around your pointer finer, then roll over your face for a more natural application
BENEFITS
Today's foundations come with SPF, alpha-hydroxy acids, moisturizers and copper. Since foundation is on your face throughout the day, it's the perfect opportunity to treat your particular skin problem,
Products: Neutrogena Visibly Firm with/Active Copper (firms skin); Sue Devitt Studio Triple C-weed with antioxidants
Oily skin: Choose foundations that provide "matte" coverage, oil-free, or, cream-to-powder formulas.
Products: L'Oreal Air Wear Powder Foundation; Make-Up Forever Mat Velvet Oil-Free Foundation
Combination skin: Traditionally, matte meant opaque and moisturized meant shiny, so what do you do if you have combination skin? Choose formulas that will absorb oils in the T-zone, while moisturizing in the other areas or a stick foundation, which will mask shine in the t-zone and blend well on other areas of the face.
Products: YSL Teint de Jour Tinte Matte Moisturizer, $38 or BeComing Perfect Balance Condition Foundation; Chanel Waterlights Sheer Makeup Stick
Dry skin: If you have dry skin, choose a moisturizing formula that won't dry to a powder finish, or tinted moisturizers that will relieve dryness.
Products: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 (offers both UVA & UVB Protection); Paula Dorf Lightweight Formula Tinted Moisturizer
